Dressing for the blistering summer heat is a challenge in itself, and adding the trek to classes while living in a swamp (literally) can be exhausting. But look no further. Trying to balance the outdoor blaze with the indoor AC blizzard isn’t as tough as it seems. Here are some tips to get you through the summer:

1. Breezy pieces

Lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton can let the wind breathe through your clothes. Stick to non-restricting pieces like dresses, skirts or loose shorts. It’s a fun way to incorporate some summer trends like mullet dresses or patterned skirts.

2. Layers

Bring a light sweater along and it’ll be your new best friend in those chilly classrooms (and buses too). Nothing’s worse than having to sit through a two-hour class with a severe case of goosebumps. A simple button-down cardigan will work best.

3. Light colors

Just as dark-colored cars absorb more heat than light-colored cars, so does clothing. By wearing lighter colors, not only will your wardrobe scream summer, but the sun’s rays won’t feel as strong either. And, pastels are in! If you have darker hair, like me, don a baseball cap on your way to class and your head (and hair!) will thank you.

4. Accessories: Sandals and sunnies and showers

Invest in a well-made, comfortable pair of sandals and your feet will be in heaven. Urban Outfitters and Zara make some cute pairs that won’t break your bank. Don’t forget your best pair of sunnies! The bright-white sidewalks can be blinding with help from the sun so save your eyes from constantly squinting. Also, Gainesville is notorious for rainy afternoons, so keep a bright-colored umbrella stashed in your bag.

5. Sunscreen

Seriously, lather up, guys. Being as red as a lobster and having to carry a loaded backpack on your shoulders just creates a disaster. Plus, those double-strapped tan lines would just be awful.

Finally, just because you’re in school, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with the summer’s hottest trends! Try out some patterned shorts or flow-y tops and enjoy your summer in Gainesville with a break at Lake Wahburg or Broward Beach.
