Healthy habits. Remember those? They included normal sleeping patterns, eating full meals at scheduled times—eating full meals period—and finding new and exciting pastimes. Given, we don’t live at home anymore, however, that still isn’t an excuse to forget about our spiritual, mental, and physical well being.

The truth is Gainesville is our home for more than 75 percent of the year. So if we have any hope of survival it’s important to find ways of being healthy right here.

It all starts with enjoying what you eat. Don’t just think of going on a diet, but change your diet. While ramen noodles, and macaroni, might provide enough calories to keep the body from shutting down freshmen year, sooner or later this poor diet won’t be enough. Poor diet choices can often be the leading cause of tiredness and irritability.

Only you know your body, so only you’ll know if a change is needed. If this sounds at all like you, and you are looking for a change, then it might be time to check out markets like Earth Origins, The Fresh Market or Trader Joe’s. All three of these markets offer unique shopping experiences throughout their grocery, deli, produce, supplement, bulk and personal care departments (especially their locally sourced produce selection and items branded by these companies).

Once you’re physical body is happy with what it has been fed, then it’ll be time to worry about the second part that makes you you.

Spirituality is a strange concept for many but think of it like this, happy soul equals happy mind. While praying is essential for the religious, there are other ways of keeping the human spirit mentally well. It’s all about feeling relaxed. Living in a clean dorm room, listening to good music, going to Lake Wauburg, and exercising regularly, are just some of the ways to keep yourself mentally checked-in.

Seems easy enough right? That’s because it is. Finding the mystical balance of being healthy starts with you. Eating and enjoying life, and being spiritually happy, are the two most important factors in finding a balance—especially in Gainesville.
