Gatsby men
Gatsby men

So you just walked out of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” and you’re thinking to yourself, “That Gatsby was a stylish fellow! I wish people still dressed like that.”

If you’re a guy, venture no further than your local Brooks Brothers.

The oldest men’s clothier in the United States has debuted The Gatsby Collection, a collection of shirts, jackets, ties, pants, shoes and more inspired by those stylish gents Jay Gatsby, Tom Buchanan and Nick Carraway.

And if anyone should know something about 1920s fashion and the eponymous dapper dandy, it certainly would be this clothier. Being the oldest men’s clothing company in America pretty much cement’s one status as the authority on fashion trends past.

Catherine Martin, the film’s costume designer, said she worked directly with Brooks Brothers to outfit the starring cast and background actors, too, in order to give the film an authentic feel.

Martin searched the Brooks Brothers archives to determine which specific trends and looks would inspire the characters’ wardrobes for “The Great Gatsby.” And you’ll notice her novel finds in multiple scenes.

Classic boater hats, colorful three-piece suits and wingtip shoes in a wide array of colors are all sported by DiCaprio (Gatsby), Maguire (Carraway) and Edgerton (Buchanan), and the clothes practically carry the film!

But that could just be the fashionista in me talking.

In any case, a plethora of 1920s garments inspired by the film can now be yours.

The pink linen suit Gatsby wears in the climactic row with Buchanan, the green collared sweater Carraway sports at afternoon tea, loafers worn by all and even more suits are sliding off of the silver screen and into your closet!

But for the college-aged Gatsby fans, you may find the authenticity is so exact, that only a man of Gatsby’s financial standing can actually afford to purchase the fashion line’s items.

Throw on one $698 jacket, a pair of $598 shoes, some $298 trousers and a single $98.50 tie and you, too, can be Jay Gatsby – for just under $1,700, old sport!
