Whenever the words ‘indie music” are mentioned, some people automatically think of the stereotypes that come along with this genre: whiny, slow ballads that scream borderline emo. And sometimes, this is the case.

But not for this Australian quintet—the band from Down Under is the farthest thing from ordinary and monotonous. But no one needs to go at bat for them—the group’s music speaks for itself.

After forming in 2010 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, Gold Fields released its album, “Black Sun,” a couple of months ago. Comprised of vocalist Mark Robert Fuller, guitarist Vin Andanar, keyboardist Rob Clifton, bassist Luke Peldys and drummer Ryan D’Sylva, it took the tight-knit bunch three attempts to finally produce their first full album. They didn’t want to produce mediocrity and their hard work and patience paid off.

Dubbed an “’80s new wave influenced dance-pop” band, Gold Fields’ new album is filled with unparalleled songs that will be played nonstop this summer.

“Treehouse” is potentially Gold Field’s most popular song. The background singers and electronic instruments make this song great to listen to during those summer drives or getting ready to go out with friends. The upbeat sound and carefree lyrics set the tone for the rest of the album.

Another great song is “Meet My Friends.” The unconventional sound is carried through out, making this song contagious and constantly put on repeat. The carefree ambience is apparent throughout this song and the entire album.

To be honest, every song in “Black Sun” is unique and phenomenal in its own way. For a band that just produced and released its first full album, this is pretty impressive. But the road to success wasn’t always easy—it all started in a run-down room where they began recording songs that eventually compiled into an EP and eventually “Black Sun".

As for Gold Fields, this is only just the start. After touring the U.S. and worldwide, this Australian quintet is excited to keep touring and create more music that is original and inspires its fans.
