Topanga Lawrence the most amazing human ever

True confession: When I watched "Boy Meets World" for the first time at 5 years old, I decided I wanted to grow up to be Topanga Lawrence. Mostly because I wanted to stay best friends with, date and eventually marry my best friend, just like she did. Almost 16 years, bottles of reality and countless inevitable situations later, I’ve realized that Topanga’s relationship with Cory Matthews is a one-of-a-kind treasure and while it’s absolutely adorable on TV, it’s not realistic. I’ve realized that her perfect relationship is just one of her amazing qualities, not what makes her amazing. So whether you’re already nodding your head in agreement or still need to be convinced, let me share 15 reasons why I believe Miss Topanga Lawrence is the best character to ever grace the small screen.

  1. She’s wise beyond her years. In the first season of "Boy Meets World," Topanga and Cory are paired up by Mr. Feeny to work on a project together, and while working on it at Cory’s house, she says to him “Well, if it’s important to you, then it’s beautiful.” She knows that material items hold valuable because of the sentimental value behind them. Pretty impressive for an 11-year-old. Her hippy parents taught her well.
  2. She knows the world is a better place when women are running it. Sorry, boys, but she’s right. In the first season of the show, Mr. Feeny assigns his students a project in which they must completely construct their futures, detailing their occupations, family lives, living situation and finances. When Topanga and Mr. Feeny are discussing her project, he says that her world seems peaceful and like a beautiful place to which she responds, “Yes, well, that’s because we put all the men underground and just use them for breeding.” I forgot about that line, but when I heard it again while watching "Boy Meets World" instead of studying for spring finals, all I thought was "pure gold." Even if you don’t agree, you have to admit that women handle things more peacefully, and Topanga is amazing for saying that.
  3. She doesn’t care what people think about her. Mr. Feeny is not pleased with Cory’s performance on a project about air pollution, so he pairs him with Topanga to redo the project. Topanga has the brilliant idea to do an interpretive dance while Cory reads a poem, and Cory’s response is “OK. We could do that or we could just be normal.” It’s pretty funny, but Topanga proceeds to ask him why he cares what other people think. And she’s right. Why should they care what others think? She brings up the important point of doing what feels right to you and not worrying about what others think. Another good life lesson from Topanga Lawrence.
  4. She knows what qualities are truly important when looking for a boyfriend/girlfriend. Early in the show before all of the girls realize what a catch Cory Matthews is, Topanga likes him for his personality and “whole package.” (She tells him that in one episode, and it’s so adorable!) While Cory is busy feeling self-conscious about his “Brillo Pad hair,” (his words, not mine. I would never say that about dear Cory.) Topanga is attracted to him.
  5. She believes that if something is meant to be, it will happen. She tells Cory, “I do my thing, and you do your thing, and if we end up together in the end, then it’s beautiful.” ATTENTION: This is the best relationship advice you will EVER get. I’m going to refrain from preaching, but please remember this for the rest of your life.
  6. SMART. Can you say “one of the best brainiacs ever to be on TV”? Well, not five times fast. She gets straight A’s, gets accepted to Yale University, graduates from John Adams High as valedictorian, gets a prestigious internship in New York City that thousands of students apply for and I can’t even wait to see how smart she’ll be in "Girl Meets World."
  7. She’s not afraid of being smarter than her man candy. Before I write about this one, I would like to sincerely apologize for the use of “man candy.” I normally hate that phrase, but I just feel like man candy is the only way to accurately portray how great Cory is. So now that we’ve got that out of the way, Topanga never downplays her intelligence. And let’s face it, she always gets better grades and works harder in school than Cory. Even when they’re in college and Cory feels like he’s not smart as her and even gets jealous of her, she simply helps him work through that, instead of dumbing herself down.
  8. She’s one amazing example of how to have it all as a girl. Beauty, hair, brains, wit. Honestly, what more could you ask for? She’s amazing, but she’s not obsessed with having it all and being “perfect.” Well, except when it comes to grades. “Give me the A, Feeny!” she says as she grabs his shirt and scares him. But in general, she doesn’t expect to be perfect because she knows life is full of imperfections, which brings us back to her being wise beyond her age.
  9. She has a lot of self-esteem, but she’s not cocky. Right before the gang graduates from high school, Stuart Minkus returns to the show and asks Topanga why she thinks she’ll be valedictorian, and she calmly replies, “Because I’m Topanga.” If I went around saying to people, “Because I’m Sarah,” no one would talk to me because I would be the most conceited person ever, but she says it, and everyone’s just like “oh, uh-huh, yup. She’s Topanga.” But aside from that, she’s rarely ever cocky.
  10. She rocks the name Topanga. And I mean rocks it! Obviously, Topanga is not a common name. One would probably think that a girl named Topanga would get made fun of all her life, not be the most badass female character on TV. But our beloved Topanga Lawrence is just that. Even Word Document recognizes Topanga as a word.
  11. She understands how important it is for two best friends to spend alone time together. One of Shawn’s many girlfriends, Jennifer, hears Cory say something bad about her, so she decides to make it her mission to keep them apart and make Shawn choose between her and Cory. Excuse me, but what a B. Luckily, Topanga intervenes and later tells Cory that she would never come between his friendship with Shawn because she knows how important a best friend is. She’s seriously such a good girlfriend.
  12. She’s played by Danielle Fishel. She’s essentially Topanga Lawrence in real life. I watched an interview with her recently about "Girl Meets World," and she said she thinks of Topanga as a side of herself, and she likes to believe she shares a lot of the same characteristics as Topanga. How cute is that?! And she really is similar to Topanga. She’s funny, sweet, outgoing, beautiful, smart and witty.
  13. She only butts in when it’s necessary and pays off. I’m not really sure how, but whenever Topanga butts in, it always works out. I don’t remember one episode where Topanga sticks her nose in and doesn’t end up making the situation better. Cory, on the other hand, being the idealistic kind, sweet fellow that he is, tends to attempt to help people who don’t want his help and usually ends up being told to butt out.
  14. HAIR. Buzzfeed did an article on how great her hair is. An entire article and not a short one either. That pretty much speaks for itself.
  15. She’s perfect. And trust me, I’m not someone who uses the word perfect. In fact, I hate the word perfect because I don’t think anyone is perfect; imperfections are beautiful. But if I had to deem one person perfect, it would be Miss Topanga Lawrence.

If you’re not already convinced of her awesomeness, then I highly suggest watching the entire series again. Every single episode is on YouTube; it’s glorious. Keep being Topanga fans and get ready for Girl Meets World.
