Packing for college for the first time as a freshman can be stressful and tough. Most of you haven’t experienced life in Gainesville yet, and know whether or not to bring just one more sweater. Well, here’s some basic pieces that you definitely shouldn’t leave at home.

Girls:

Lightweight sweaters: UF classrooms can get chilly, even when it’s 90 degrees outside. Bring some light sweaters that you can toss in your bag in case you get cold.

Umbrella: Bring a couple of these. Keep one small one in your bag and another in your dorm. There’s a reason we’re nick-named Rainesville.

Heels: Personally, I would bring a cute pair of nude wedges (something that’ll go with everything, day or night) but that’s up to you. The nightlife here isn’t over the top, so your going-out wardrobe doesn’t need to be either.

Cross-body bag: You’ll use this a lot. These are really convenient for keeping your hands free but your stuff safe.

One (or two) heavy winter jacket: It doesn’t need to be a winter parka (don’t go crazy here) but something warm enough for those mornings temperatures reach the 20s (it does happen!) However, the weather will often warm up, so be sure to dress in layers, so you’re not sweating when the sun comes out.

Nice work clothes: If you’re planning on getting a job, or an internship, make sure you bring a couple of professional outfits that you can wear to work. You don’t want to show up on your first day with shorts and flip flops when everyone else is wearing business attire. A nice outfit will also come in handy if you have a business presentation to give for class.

Guys:

Jeans: Find a good pair of well-fitting jeans that you can wear to class and after. You’re 18 now, it’s about time you have a simple pair that flatters.

Backpack: If you’re going to be lugging books back and forth from class, invest in a good, strong backpack. You’re back will thank you.

Wallet: A nice wallet will help you jump from high school kid to college adult. Invest in a well-made leather version that you can use for years.

Sweaters and jackets: It does get cold in Gainesville, so bring along a couple of pieces of outerwear. Make sure you have stuff that you can layer, so as the day gets warmer, you won’t be overdressed.

Button-up shirt: Bring some nice button-up shirts. Whether it’s a job interview or you’re finally taking that girl from down the hall on a first date, you’ll want to dress nice. Just pick some basic colors that will fit seamlessly in your wardrobe.
