Sushi was once seen as an obscure food, but over the past decade or so it has become increasingly popular and mainstream.
There are sushi spots all over Gainesville, and there are four alone in the little stretch of University Avenue that is midtown. If you’re unfamiliar with the restaurants in midtown, deciding where to grab some sushi can be a tough choice. Here’s a guide to help you out:
1. How Do You Roll
How Do You Roll is the newest sushi place in midtown, so it’s not quite as popular as the other places yet. How Do You Roll is unique because you have the option of choosing exactly what you want in your roll: the type of rice, fillings, toppings, etc. This is fun because you can custom order your sushi just the way you like it. There is plenty of seating, and the interior is clean and modern. The service is also great.
2. Tatu
What Tatu has to offer that the other places lack is an extensive menu in addition to their sushi. Tatu has awesome lunch specials that give you a lot of food for a low price. The atmosphere is slightly more formal, and it’s a sit-down restaurant, which is nice when you want to be waited on. Just keep in mind that it can get super busy at night.
3. Sushi Chao
Sushi Chao is probably the most popular place for Asian food in midtown. In addition to sushi, there is a “weigh and pay” buffet for hot food. This is nice because you can get a variety of food, and you can control the amount you get. Sushi Chao also has bubble tea. One downside to Sushi Chao is that there’s minimal seating.
4. Sushi-2-Go
Sushi-2-Go is known for their low prices and fast delivery. While the other places offer delivery service as well, Sushi-2-Go has the latest hours (open until midnight.) This is perfect for late-night sushi cravings when you don’t feel like getting off the couch. Sushi-2-Go is the only place on this list I have yet to try for myself, but from what I’ve heard their sushi is about average. Nothing spectacular, but the price is right.
