Getting a fresh start to a new semester

Moving in, adjusting to classes and adapting to a new fall schedule is undoubtedly stressful. Especially for those who are new to the University of Florida, achieving a balance between social and school life is a challenge that is presented from the very first day. However, health is something no one should let slip away! Late night pizza binges in the library and less gym time can quickly add up to the Freshman 15…18…25.

An easy way to begin an exercise regimen again is with fitness classes offered by RecSports.  They can be found here and are easy to sign up for. I recommend dance lovers to try out Zumba or Hip Hop Fitness. The quick beats and fun moves make you forget you are even working out! UF’s RecSports Department this year developed new versions of popular classes, transitioning them from an hour to 30 minutes. Total Body Express combines cardio and strength training designed to target abs, legs, and arms all in one 30 min. class. They are perfect for fitting gym time in class breaks between schedules.

One aspect of a healthy lifestyle that is difficult to accomplish is eating well. I personally despise diets and refuse to ever go on one. Yet, this does not mean I eat whatever I may want whenever I want. I recommend purposefully designing a schedule around specific mealtimes. For example, don’t schedule an 11:45 or 12:50 class any day of the week if possible, and designate that as a lunch hour. Getting a set mealtime schedule will help your body adjust to a different environment and will prevent skipping meals, which slows down your metabolism and deprives you of nutrients.

A few other tips:

DRINK WATER!

Try to take a multivitamin every day.

Don’t stress! It’s bad for your health, and just not very fun.

A healthy lifestyle doesn’t require strict diets or countless hours at the gym. The most important rule to follow is that everything should be done in moderation; ice cream is fine…just not a whole gallon.
