Recently Passion Pit streamed their newest EP "Constant Conversation." Although the EP only has three songs, it packs a lot of power and contains a lot of diversification within the music.

When Michael Angelokos recorded his first EP, a Valentine’s Day present for his girlfriend, he never imagined that he would end up where he is today, with a band, two albums out, signed to Columbia Records, and just releasing his second EP.

The title of the new EP comes from the name of a song in the 2012 album Gossamer. The song makes a new appearance in this EP completely revamped. Passion Pit puts a spin on the song, speeding it up and adding more hype to it. The song becomes more electronic and upbeat. Angelokos’s voice rides on the music like a wave, jumping up and down, permeated by soft “oohs” in the background. The new song actually sounds like a completely different song, a more positive song.

The next song on the album is actually the only completely new song on the EP. The song titled “Ruin Your Day” hypes down the album, but still maintains the positive beat that “Constant Conversations” set. Angeloko’s vocals shine in this song as they become the predominant sound with only soft rhythmic thumps, keyboard, and occasional chiming and wind effects accompanying his voice.

“Don’t let your worries ruin your day,” Angelokos sings softly as if speaking directly to the listener and giving him sound advice. He repeats the line several times throughout the songs with a story about an unfortunate day he had interspersed between the choruses.  The lyrics contain a heavy message about trying not to let our worries get the best of us and pressing on even when they start to consume us.

The song has a comforting, natural feel and sounds almost personal with its soft beat, the lead singer’s edging, almost desperate voice and its tale about a man who just got lost in his worries and reacted in ways that most anyone else would. The song is a nice addition to Passion Pit’s track list, potentially leading to more songs that captivate the reader in such a personal manner.

The last song on the EP is actually a remix of the popular hit “Carried Away” by Dillon Francis. Dillon Francis is best known for his songs “I.D.G.A.F.” and “Without You” and his work in the moombaton (a fusion between reggaeton and house music) and moombahcore (the percussions and backbeat of moombaton with the soft smooth sounds of dubsteb) fields of music. The remix is fun and interesting. Dillon Francis does a good job at mixing the song which sounds a lot like something you would dubstep concert or an upscale club. The song, however, becomes so altered that if it weren’t for the occasional “I get carried away,” it would be almost unrecognizable.

The EP may be small in size, but it contains enough diversity to quench your thirst for new music from them until the next album rolls around.
