brownies
brownies

On the day of my best friend's birthday we decided to partake in a craft of epic proportions. You see, her birthday happened to fall on Groundhog Day. You could say that on this day 18 years ago, she took the place of the groundhog coming out of it's home after such a long winter. Sadly for us, she didn't see her shadow and determine there were six more weeks of winter, thus going back into her home to stay. Darn that newborn eyesight. However, seeing as we're stuck with her we might as well make the best of it.

How did we do this? Easy, we played off of the Groundhog folklore and looked on Pinterest. What she found was a recipe for brownies. But these aren't just any brownies. They're brownies that, with the help of Snickers bars, mini M&M's and a bit of frosting, looked like tiny groundhogs.

We started by making the brownies. Or maybe she made the brownies and I came after. The details are fuzzy. But either way, the recipe was from a box, because lets be honest it tastes just as good, sometimes better than home-made, if it comes from a box. Regardless, brownies were made.

We then proceeded to put miniature Snickers into the top of the brownies. It sounds pretty simple, but it was actually quite challenging. The Snickers continually broke and cracked. Luckily for us, we're geniuses and decided to just cut a bit out of the brownies to put in the Snickers with no problems.

This is when things got fun. The base of the groundhog was set, now it was decorating time. We put brown M&Ms as the ears and as their cheeks. I'm not actually sure if they're called cheeks, but oh well. We ruined many Snickers by putting the M&Ms in as ears. It's harder than you think. It cracks everything. Snickers are fragile, people. For eyes, we had white frosting dotted, then we put tiny sprinkles on top. The tiny sprinkles also served as noses. They were very cute noses.

While individually, they were adorable, as a set it was kind of creepy. Imagine an army of small groundhogs staring at you with beady white eyes. It was as if they were chanting "happy birthday Kaitlyn, happy birthday Kaitlyn" over and over again, all the while never blinking or even moving their mouths. When you give something a face, it seems as if you've given it life. That's exactly what we did with these brownies. Personification at it's finest, my friends.

All in all though, it was a success. We honored the groundhog while honoring the birthday girl. The guests were very impressed with our creativity and ingeniousness. And the brownies were delicious.
