Photos celebrating global cultures to be displayed in campus gallery

Lauren Moore was in the middle of Berlin, walking with a friend, when she saw something that caught her eye: a man walking with a tray of eggs on his head.

“He saw us with our cameras and was trying to kind of pose for us,” said the 20-year-old UF public relations senior.

Moore’s shot recently took second place in the UF Global Culture Photo Contest study abroad and service learning students category.

The exhibit is now open at the UF Grinter Gallery and will run until Nov. 22. At 2 p.m. on Nov. 18, the winners will share their stories behind the photos.

Rob Witzel, photo editor for The Gainesville Sun and one of the judges this year, said he looked for pictures that showed moments not usually seen on the news.

Witzel, who teaches a UF lighting photography class, said he wanted winning photos that grabbed him and made him understand what was going on in the picture. He said the demonstration of culture and the technical ability of the photographer were characteristics that helped determine the winners.

A version of this story ran on page 3 on 11/6/2013 under the headline "Photos honor global Gators"
