I downloaded Tinder Oct. 27, and I have to say, for a few hours- I was addicted. I never realized how many hot guys there are at UF, which made me wonder why don’t I ever meet them in person?! After pondering that for a while, I continued swiping. And swiping some more.

But after 37 matches (we both “liked” each other’s profile) and some funny and boring conversations, I got bored. And interesting fact- out of my 37 matches, not one of the guys who has messaged me actually goes to UF. I guess I’m not the only UF student using Tinder solely for a laugh and fun game with no intent whatsoever of actually meeting someone from the app in person.

Another conclusion I came to based on my experience, and the major reason I got so bored so quickly, is that there are exactly five types of guys on Tinder. Well, maybe not five, but let’s just say there’s not much variety.

1. The nice guy who’s had his heart broken and now just wants to “have some fun.” Read: Casual sex/ friends with benefits. I messaged with a guy who asked me why I was on Tinder. He told me he wasn’t looking for a relationship and finally told me he wants to “meet someone and have some fun.” I quickly told him I’m not the girl for him; we continued talking, and he told me why he just wants to have fun, nothing serious- his girlfriend/fiancé of eight years broke off their engagement. Ouch.

2. The desperate guy. One guy’s profile picture was of him holding a sign that read “Swipe right!!” (You swipe right when you like someone and left when you don’t.) And unfortunately, I accidentally swiped right. No more than 10 minutes later, I got a message from him saying “Morning!” I never responded. And since have gotten two more “morning” and “afternoon” messages.

3. The guy actually looking for a serious relationship. I have no idea why, but it seems some guys have actually decided that looking for a girlfriend on Tinder, is in fact, not at all ridiculous and quite a good plan. Alright, dude. I sincerely hope that works for you, but let me say, there’s a 99.999999999999999 percent chance that’s not going to happen.

4. The one who just wants an ego-boost. And honestly, I have to say, I kind of totally understand where he’s coming from. All of these attractive, or at least fairly attractive people, are “liking” you based on your pictures. Pretty flattering. One guy messaged me, and his opening line was “Which of my pictures do you like the best?” not “Hello” or anything else along those lines. Simply out for a confidence boost? Ohhh yeah.

5. The guy who just thinks Tinder is hilarious and uses it as a game. I think it’s safe to say this is why most girls who are on Tinder use it. I know it’s why I use it. It’s just like a hot or not game with the added fun of possibly knowing someone on there, which actually might be really awkward, but that’s OK. But it’s nice to know there are like-minded guys as well.
