“Saturday Night Live” has added comedian Sasheer Zamata to its cast after being criticized last year for a lack of diversity.

Zamata is the first black female cast member in six years, following Maya Rudolph’s exit in 2007.

A regular of the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy group in New York City, Zamata is also known for her YouTube channel, which shows off a range of impressions from Michelle Obama to Beyoncé.

Last October, current cast member Kenan Thompson commented on the absence of black females in the group to TV Guide, saying the show had difficulty in finding enough seasoned women for the job.

Until Zamata’s casting, Thompson and resident impressionist Jay Pharoah were the only two black actors on the sketch comedy show. SNL has featured four black women in its troupe since its premiere in 1975.

Executive producer Lorne Michaels held auditions last December following the criticism.

The first episode for Zamata, a University of Virginia alumna, is on Jan. 18, with rapper Drake serving as the host and musical guest.

"I think that it’s great SNL is gaining a more diverse cast,” said Connor Hachey, a 20-year-old telecommunication junior. “Since the show is on a nationally broadcasted network, it’s important for the cast members to be a reflection of the actual audience. I haven’t seen any of her previous work, but I’m hoping she’ll be a great addition."
