The Whole You: A post all women should read

I am a firm believer in appreciating flaws and using them to your advantage. “Flaws” are beautiful on people; I love the unique combinations of genes that spit out creations that mark one as an individual. What even constitutes a flaw? A flaw is only created in your mind; flaws should be seen as a beautiful reflection of individuality. There is no definition of what someone is supposed to look like, for we are all born with differences in skin color, body type, physical features — the list goes on. How can there only be one definition of what beauty is, when the world is filled with billions of people who all have been created with different features?

The argument of beauty is forever a reigning subject in society, and the standards of what “normal people” are supposed to look like is constantly becoming more and more difficult or even impossible to attain. Society doesn’t entertain the concept of imperfection, of the inside mattering more than the outside. This is a product of advertisements and societal pressures trickling into the very core of what the world’s values are.

People do not always blindly follow the paths societal institutions have set out for us, but to argue that the way society values beauty does not affect the way people perceive themselves to be is to be ignorant. Beauty is individualistic and comes in many forms. Stop staring at the mirror, adding on to the list of what you want to change about yourself; stop forming unhealthy relationships with food and exercise, and stop comparing yourself.

There is no reason to compare yourself to someone else because of one simple fact:

You're stuck with the face you were dealt in that gene pool your parents so lovingly created for you. You're also stuck with your shyness or your carnality, your lack of common sense or your fear of heights. You are stuck with the innumerable traits that make up that living, breathing body you get to walk around in. Your body is a gift; you have been given this amazing creation to experience the beauty that life has to offer. Can we really be so superficial as to need more than the gift of life?

People say that the most beautiful part of someone is their body, their smile or maybe their eyes. They say their skin is clear, their thighs don’t touch or their hair is always in perfect waves.

But I’ll let you all in on a very big secret: To embrace who you are and to love yourself just as this universe has created you is the most beautiful trait a person can have.
