On Trend, On a Budget: Skort the rules

I first saw it rear its majestic face a few weeks back.

It was an average Tuesday morning. There I was, just another day in the office -- performing my intern-ly duties at the copy machine. It sashayed past me, unassuming in its perfect combination of feminine and tomboy. Black in color, pointed in cut, it glided its wearer through the cubicled corrdidor like a ship's sail cutting through the ocean's surface.

The skort had arrived.

But perhaps it's more accurate to say the skort has returned. After all, the little crush we have on this piece of clothing probably started in elementary school. Selected for us for its versatile shorts-and-skirt-in-one combo, the stylish look is the epitome of functional fashion. The skort allowed us to climb jungle gyms and slip down slides, all while looking unabashedly ladylike!

And the skort is enjoying an edgy return now -- it's everyday practicality still being a huge draw for this particular city-dwelling NYC fashion intern (don't even get me started on those blustery subway grates!). I may have first seen its return on a fellow intern at work, but in the few weeks that have passed, I've noticed the same super chic style breaking into the wardrobes of the most fashionable New Yorkers I know.

One of the most popular cuts of the modern-day skort has probably changed from the one you remember. The front of the hem is not straight-across but angular, with two pointed tips falling mid-thigh on the wearer. From the back, though, it would appear you were simply donning some shorts, keeping the look delightfully nostalgic, in my opinion.

Still not sure you're catching my drift? Check out the skort options available now at Zara, ranging from about $14 to $20, or even Forever 21 from about $14 to $18. Pair the skort with some dark-colored combat boots for a seriously cool take on the trend. With all that trendiness falling to the bottom half of your outfit, keep it simple on top. A plain v-neck or slouchy blouse will complement the entire ensemble nicely.

And as long as you keep the hem at a respectable length, the look is totally appropriate for class, work, or even hitting the town with friends that night.

Who said fashion couldn't be pretty and practical? Skort the rules, and try out the look for yourself!
