If you could wish for your heart’s desire and have it granted, would you? You know what they say about magic: every spell, every wish has its price.

Last week, the first trailer for Disney’s musical adaptation of “Into the Woods” debuted online, and we got our first glimpse of Hollywood’s greats as our favorite storybook characters. The cast boasts over a dozen talented actors, including Meryl Streep as the Witch, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Emily Blunt as the Baker’s Wife, and Chris Pine as Cinderella’s Prince.

Throughout the famous Stephen Sondheim musical, each character ventures into the woods to fulfill their wish: to visit Granny, to go to the Festival, to break a spell. Of course, not everything goes according to legend.

And boy, is it intoxicating. Retold fairytales and legends have certain magic to them of their own; when you think you know what’s happening, being surprised is wonderful.  The trailer doesn’t give us any of the singing, but it didn’t need to. Seeing the magic vines, the misty forest and our first glimpses of our favorites in their fairytale garb was enough.

Disney got some flack for editing around some adult subject matter, but it was expected. Sondheim approves. And with a big-budgeted studio like Disney backing this show, it’s sure to thrill audiences regardless.

The magic Hollywood/fairytale extravaganza is scheduled for a December 25 release, and we’re sure to get more trailers, stills and footage before then. This next Disney film is not one to miss.
