The Starving Gator: Hogan's
The Starving Gator: Hogan's

Hogan’s will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first restaurant I fell in love with in Gainesville. Years before I became a student, my uncle– a proud Gator alumnus and an avid Gator football fan– told my family about this great sandwich shop he found in Gainesville. All it took was one bite of one of their sandwiches and I was hooked. To this day it remains one of my favorite restaurants in Gainesville and one of my regular places to head for lunch.

Decorated with World War II posters and propaganda, Hogan’s definitely sticks out from your run-of-the-mill sandwich shop. The thing that reallymakes Hogan’s stand out, though, is how large the sandwiches are. These sandwiches are piled with so much meat and toppings that a six-inch sub fills you like a feast (and I’m a person with a hearty appetite).

My favorite sandwich and regular order is the number six combination hero. It has turkey, roast beef, ham, and provolone cheese with your choice of toppings. My favorite way to order it is pressed, though it is just as delicious served cold. I usually order a foot long, eat half of it that day, and save the rest of it for another day. Hogan’s also has a pretty tasty macaroni salad that has a light cream sauce and peas.

If you’re not in the mood for a sub, I would highly recommend their chicken quesadilla. Though it may seem a bit odd to order one at a known sub shop, it is extremely delicious and it’s one of my favorite items on the menu. Like the sandwiches, this quesadilla is stuffed to the brim with chicken and cheese. It’s also topped with a chipotle ranch sauce that tastes incredible.

With two locations at 2327 NW 13th St. and 5156 SW 34th Street, it’s easy to stop by and grab a sub. A word of warning: Hogan’s only takes cash or local checks, so stop by the ATM before heading there. Bon appetit!
