We inform. You decide.

I’ve been to several seminars in the past year regarding professionalism and what to say and wear to an interview. My brain was often on overload by the time they were over.

Instead of making you sit through hours of seminars, I’m going to give you five simple tips to follow when you’re being interviewed:

1. Sit up straight.

We subconsciously view people differently when they are sitting up straight. We think of them as confident, intelligent and polite. Sitting up straight will automatically make you seem attractive for the position you are being interviewed for.

2. Don’t brag.

It’s important to highlight your strengths and achievements, but most people are turned off by big egos. Even though you might just want to inform your interviewer of your capabilities, he or she might think you’re bragging. Instead, state how you can help the company with your skills, and don’t just list them.

3. Do your homework.

Don’t just walk into an interview not really knowing the goals of the company or organization. Mention the company’s previous endeavors and innovations.

4. Answer the question.

It doesn’t matter if it takes you a couple of minutes or 30 seconds; just answer the question clearly without going off on a tangent.

5. “Yes, I have a question.”

When an interviewer asks you if you have any questions, say yes. Always have a question prepared before entering the interview room.
