For your entertainment: SoJam features abundant opportunities for collegiate a cappella bonding, performance

Not as chilly as Sojams past, this year’s 12th annual a cappella festival was studded by Durham’s cold breeze, which cut through the unexpectedly Florida-esque weather, and emotional moments between a cappella veterans and students alike.

SoJam is a weekend that collegiate a cappella groups wait for all year. Professional vocalists, music educators and groups from all over the country come together to celebrate a cappella.

We geek out over chord progressions together; we get super fancy; we loiter around the venue’s auditorium, pretending we’re not waiting to talk to Pentatonix’s Avi Kaplan or sneak a selfie with The Boxettes.

SoJam transcends multiple age groups, interests, occupations and lifestyles because that’s what a cappella is: a wonderful and dynamic safe-haven for people who love to sing.

That being said, excellence abounds.

SoJam not only features multiple professional groups who captivate and inspire each year, but also holds a competition for collegiate groups.

This year, FSU groups dominated the scene. The Acabelles, FSU’s all-female a cappella group, won the competition and multiple other special honors. All-Night Yahtzee, FSU’s award-winning co-ed group, came in second place. No Southern Accent and Tone Def – both UF co-ed groups – also attended the festival.

The competition is an amazing opportunity for collegiate groups. They perform with Sojam’s sound system, and every group member is mic’d. For many groups, the SoJam stage represents the best sound, performance and audience they will ever have.

The Contemporary A Cappella Society executives work every year to bring these fortunes to collegiate groups and Sojam audiences, planning every detail and scheduling two days of educational seminars, classes and personal workshops with a cappella veterans.
