Today is the voter registration deadline for the March 17 City of Gainesville Elections.
Gainesville residents can verify and update their voter registration status online at the Vote Alachua website, according to a press release. The Supervisor of Elections Office, located at 111 SE First Ave., is open and accepting applications from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Each of us must participate in our democratic process in order to keep it strong,” Supervisor of Elections Pam Carpenter wrote in an email. “If we don’t participate we allow others to choose for us.”
An after-hours drop-off is available at the main entrance for those who can’t make it during regular business hours. Voter registration applications sent through the mail drop will be accepted up until midnight today.
As of press time, there are 74,447 registered voters in the City of Gainesville, Carpenter said. In 2014, there were 72,017.
Steven Hollis, 20, said he’s excited for the upcoming elections.
“If you don’t know what’s really going on, it’s hard for you to get a better grasp of what’s going on in your community,” the UF economics junior said. “You can’t beat the election day frenzy.”
