Voting for Student Government kicked off Monday morning at Santa Fe College.
Under a thick, overcast sky at about 11:30 a.m., students flocked to a single voting station outside S Building where they received two slices of pizza in exchange for their vote.
Bryan Dolson, 19, had planned on voting at home but decided to vote early when he walked by the voting station.
“I figured I might as well do it and get free pizza,” the undeclared major said.
The candidates running are Connor Flynn and Hannah Gwynn, who are running unopposed for Student Body president and vice president respectively, and Justin Deese and Timothy Bergman for Treasurer.
But some students said they knew little to nothing about the candidates on the ballot.
Adam Smith, a 20-year-old political science sophomore, said the lack of information about candidates “makes you feel like you’re just winging it, and you don’t really know who you’re voting for.”
He said he was disappointed by the small pool of candidates to choose from.
“I literally don’t know who they are,” said Nick Diaz, a 19-year-old Santa Fe psychology freshman. “There is nothing around here that tells me who they are.”
Shortly before 3:30 p.m., the pizza ran out, and the polling station quickly went vacant. Within a half hour, the station closed.
Sen. Connor Levine and other SG members said there was a good turnout, but no hard numbers will be available until Wednesday’s Senate meeting at 4 p.m.
Students can cast their vote today at the polling station outside of P Building. The location for Wednesday’s voting station will be determined based on which of the two locations draw the largest turnout.
