The Swamp Restaurant to get ‘Game of Thrones’ prop

The iron throne will be in someone else’s hands — The Swamp Restaurant.

The famed symbol of power from the TV show "Game of Thrones" will be coming to The Swamp Restaurant on Wednesday as part of a Halloween event hosted by HBO. The Swamp was one of three college venues chosen to host the Halloween party this week, which is designed to promote the HBO app, HBO NOW.

The first 1,000 people to show the app on a device when doors open at 7 p.m. Wednesday will receive free entry, said HBO’s GMR Marketing account supervisor Vica Shobe. Other attendees will pay a $5 cover.

In addition to the throne, the event will have themed decorations from "True Detective," "True Blood" and "The Leftovers." Shobe said they chose the "creepy" shows on HBO to set the atmosphere.

"We’re decking out The Swamp Restaurant to make you feel like you’re stepping into the world of HBO," Shobe said. "The restaurant has been such a great partner in allowing us to do that."

Shobe said the event was budgeted for about 1,000 people to get in for free, but she did not give a specific amount.

"We have a Halloween party every year, but this is the first HBO event," The Swamp’s general manager Nicholas Smith said.

Jonathan Frish, a UF business administration sophomore said as a "Game of Thrones" fan, he is looking forward to the event.

"I’m excited to see what sort of things HBO is doing to reach UF students on campus," the 19-year-old said.

Michael Rankin, 20, who was one of six UF students chosen to be a campus agent for the event, said the event is an opportunity to work with the HBO creative team.

"I’m excited to see people’s reactions and see this come to life," the UF public relations senior said. "It will be completely outside of people’s imaginations."
