UF to draw laughs at first Improv Invitational

UF’s Treble Makers will host nine other teams from across Florida for a new improvisational comedy invitational this weekend.

Nick Slater, a UF alumnus,  said he and four others organized the invitational where teams will act and think on their feet.

Teams from the University of South Florida and Florida Southern College will compete alongside UF groups. The event begins Friday in the Rion ballroom and will go through Sunday.

On Saturday, teams will act from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Four teams will compete at 8 p.m. in a  “Cagematch.” During this, the teams will be evaluated by judges for cleverness, originality and funniness.

“There is a lot of rich talent in Florida, and we wanted to just bring them together to meet each other, have fun and the main thing — to entertain,” Slater said.

He said the event will allow actors to meet and support one another. He said he hopes students come watch.

Eric Rose, the vice president of Theatre Strike Force, 22, will set the comedy scenes as a proctor for the group’s short-form team. That team performs shorter segments of improv throughout a roughly 25-minute period.

“We want to show the other schools what we’ve got,” the UF mechanical engineering senior said.
