Vegan bakery owned by Krishna House opens on 13th Street

Krishna House opened a vegan and vegetarian bakery Wednesday.

Govinda’s Bakery and Cafe, located at 604 NW 13th St., is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, said Caitanya Long, vice president and general manager of Krishna House.

Starting April 3, the bakery will also serve Sunday brunch from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Long said the menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts.

Among the options are a curry burger, broccoli cheddar soup, barbeque baked tofu and walnut chocolate chip cookies, according to the restaurant’s website.

“We also wanted something that was really inexpensive that would fill people up and really satisfy them,” she said.

Customers can combine two choices for $7.95, or they can opt for the “Full Plate”, which includes three choices and a dessert for $11.95, Long said.

Chloe Butler, a 19-year-old UF business sophomore, said some students schedule their classes around Krishna Lunch.

“To be able to go to a bakery where you can get this type of food any time would be really awesome,” she said.

Sara Kopetman, a 19-year-old UF forestry sophomore, said she plans to visit Govinda’s in the future.

“There’s not a lot of vegan places around,” she said. “It’s a great business idea for them to open one because people already know they are good at making food.”
