Alachua County promotes bookmobiles during National Library Week

The Alachua County Library District will commemorate mobile libraries as part of a larger celebration throughout the week.

During National Library Week, which started Sunday and ends Saturday, the district will promote about 100 services available at branches throughout the county, said Chris Culp, the public services division director.

“We’re not doing more,” she said. “But we are telling people more about what we are doing.”

Wednesday is National Bookmobile Day. The county’s first bookmobile began its route in 1959, said David Fuller, the outreach services manager. He said each mobile library contains about 2,000 items, including print books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs.

“The people who come on the bookmobile are very supportive, wonderful people,” Fuller said, “and we enjoy having them.”

Culp said two bookmobiles now make scheduled stops five days a week in Gainesville and other cities in the county. They make a difference, she said, by providing on-site resources to “serve the underserved.”

“We really do want to connect with as many people from Alachua County as we can,” she said.
