The third in a series of tribute shows benefiting the Gainesville Girls Rock Camp will take place Friday at 9:30 p.m. at Loosey’s Downtown.

The 1990s Tribute Show will feature local feminist bands covering songs from female groups and musicians of the decade.

Tickets will be sold at the door at a minimum price of $5, with an option to donate up to $10.

According to its website, Gainesville Girls Rock Camp is an organization that uses music and performance as a platform to encourage self-esteem, self-expression and community for girls.

“We wanted to provide the community with an accessible way to give the community a chance to come have fun and learn about our camp,” said Chelsea Carnes, the founder and director of the camp.

Carnes, 27, is a Gainesville local who founded the camp four years ago after volunteering at the Girls Rock Jacksonville camp.

Carnes will be performing herself, as well as Chelsea Kamm, Killarney Star, Van Tran and Kara Smith. A few of the artists who will be covered include The Cranberries, Tori Amos and Bjork.

According to Carnes, all of the performers at the benefit show have either volunteered at the camp in the past or

have performed in previous benefit shows.

“Empowering young girls in Gainesville is a great cause, and we’re hoping we get a big turnout,” Carnes said.

After the benefit show, there will be a 1990s diva karaoke hosted by DJ Wolftron.

“We chose this theme because a lot of the women who volunteer at camp grew up in the ’90s,” Carnes said, “and we felt the women of the ’90s were empowering figures, which is what we want to do for our campers.”

All of the proceeds from the show will go directly toward the camp, with the primary focus on fundraising to provide scholarships to campers.

Gainesville Girls Rock Camp is for local girls ages nine to 17. Session one runs from June 20 to 25 and is for girls nine to 13 years old. Session two is July 11 to 16 and is for girls 13 to 17 years old.

Cost of camp attendance is $200 per camper. Applications can be found at the camp’s website. No musical experience is necessary for campers, and all of the instruments at the camp have been donated.

The primary focus of the camp is to provide a place for young girls to develop the ability to express themselves freely, Carnes said.

“Girls learn how to play an instrument, but, more importantly, they gain access to a community that is accepting and encouraging,” Carnes said.
