Gov. Scott proposes new college tuition plans

Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced his goals to reduce college tuition and fees Tuesday.

His plans to promote new policies under “Finish in Four, Save More” should reduce the cost of college for Florida students, according to a press release from the governor’s office. Scott also plans on passing legislation to cut taxes on college textbooks.

Florida officials will also consider freezing tuition and fees to prevent state colleges from increasing prices, along with expanding Bright Futures, Scott announced in Tampa.

Cheryl Etters, a Florida Department of Education spokesperson, said the department would have no issue supporting Scott’s proposal if it becomes law.

“We implement (Bright Futures) based on what the law says,” Etters said.

Dylan Ramos, 25, said he works at the restaurant BJ’s Brewhouse as a server to cover the $2,000 he spends out of pocket for school.

“It’s the only job you can do where you have the money to pay for school and have flexible hours,” the Santa Fe College electrical engineering junior said.

The proposals also include an extension of Bright Futures to pay for Summer classes, according to the press release.

Diana Rodas, 19, said she is considering taking Summer classes this year and will have to work more to cover the cost.

She buys online textbooks to save money, instead of buying from the UF bookstore, the UF zoology sophomore said.

“I spent a couple hundred on books last semester, even though I shopped online,” she said.
