A 23-year-old man died after a car ran him over and dragged him several feet at The Ridge at Gainesville apartments Saturday, Gainesville Police said.

At about 11:55 p.m., Gainesville resident Malik T. Davis stumbled as he walked between two parked cars in the complex’s parking lot, located at 3718 SW 24th Ave., and fell onto the ground, Officer Ben Tobias, GPD spokesperson wrote in an email.

Garrett Coker, a 19-year-old Santa Fe engineering freshman, then drove over Davis, dragging him and trapping him underneath his car.

Bystanders tried to free Davis before responding officers arrived, Tobias said. Gainesville Fire Rescue personnel and GPD officers then lifted the vehicle and pulled him out.

GFR personnel attempted treatment on Davis, who was then taken to UF Health Shands Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Tobias said a traffic homicide investigation is still ongoing. Coker was not arrested, according to the Alachua County Jail.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
