UF Student Body President Susan Webster gave her last report to the Student Senate on Tuesday, where she announced the official start of UF’s Uber discounts.
Webster, whose term ends April 18, said the student discount, organized by Student Government and funded by UF student transportation fees, will start today at 9 p.m.
The 50 percent discount covers rides on campus and around Archer Road, 13th Street, 34th Street, University Avenue and Southwest Second Avenue, according to Alligator archives. The program cost about $46,000. Students will need a code for the discount, which can be found on the student self-service page.
Webster advertised the discount in a video posted to SG’s Facebook page, in which the instrumental to the rap song “Uber Everywhere” served as background music.
Discounted rides will run Wednesday through Sunday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., Webster said.
During the meeting, Senate also approved a new committee seat and permanent Senate seat.
Senate Pro-tempore Trevor Schaettle said five people applied for the open fine arts permanent replacement seat, for which senators unanimously approved Stephanie Watson. Five people also applied for the open allocations committee seat, which went to Senator Ryan Emery (Impact, District B).
“It was hard finding people to be here over the Summer,” Schaettle said. “I’m very happy with both of the seats.”
Webster, whose term ends a day before incoming Student Body President Smith Meyers takes office, also said Newell Hall, a 24/7 renovated study center, will open Monday at 11 a.m.
“That was a building that was brought to you for students, by students,” she said.
