UF Student Senate approved revisions of codes to include two new executive agencies.

Senate unanimously approved additions and revisions in the Administrative General and Executive codes. The changes included adding codes to legitimize The Big Event, a day-long community service event held for the first time with UF students participating Saturday, and the Florida Student Government Institute, a Florida student government conference in June, along with minor wording changes.

Judiciary chairwoman Emily Dempsey said it’s standard procedure to add executive agencies created in the past year and codes that define the roles of the chairs.

“It commemorates their hard work put forth over the school year,” she said.

During the first reading, Senate unanimously approved the 2017 to 2018 Student Government funded academics budget of $435,752, mainly for UF colleges’ council boards. Senate also approved the 2017 to 2018 SG funded organizational budget of $1,043,202 for various student organizations.

If approved again during next Tuesday’s meeting, the budget’s fiscal year will start after June.

Budget and Appropriations Chairman Ian Green said the budget committee ensures every student and academic organization operates effectively and efficiently.

“I want to condone the student organizations who came in with a fiscally sound budget,” he said.

University Police spokesperson Cpt. Jeff Holcomb gave his monthly report during the meeting, discussing students not wearing helmets while riding scooters or motorcycles in light of a student in critical condition at UF Health Shands Hospital after a motorcycle accident on March 20, according to Alligator archives.

He said it’s difficult for officers to enforce the rule that scooter drivers under 21 have to wear a helmet due to complicated laws that justify pulling scooter drivers over.

“Basically, our hands are tied by the current law,” he said.
