A Hawthorne man was recorded in the backyard of a woman who had a restraining order against him Monday. He told police he checks on her, Gainesville Police said.

Kenyata Tremayne Mayes, 39, was seen by a woman in her backyard through her home’s video surveillance system at about 9:16 p.m., according to the report. The woman, who has a restraining order against Mayes, called police.

A responding officer said Mayes walked into the backyard, got on his hands and knees and looked into the back sliding glass door of the home in the video twice in about 20 minutes.

He was served the restraining order about two years ago and told by a judge to stay 500 feet away from the woman’s home, according to the report. He was found guilty of stalking the woman after making several phone calls to her cell phone and waiting outside her church.

The officer found Mayes a block away from the woman’s home, and Mayes told police he sleeps in the woman’s yard every night because he is homeless, according to the report. He said he checks on the woman, police said.

Mayes was arrested on a charge of stalking and violating a court order and taken to the Alachua County Jail where he remains, as of press time, in lieu of a $100,000.
