The championship was already locked up.
When the men’s 4x400-meter relay teams lined up to conclude the SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday, they were competing for the meet’s second place.
The first place trophy already belonged to the Florida Gators, who did not have a 4x400 team compete and still beat second place Arkansas by 15 points.
Saturday’s success for UF began with redshirt senior AJ McFarland. The weight thrower led in the event until the third-to-last throw, when Georgia’s defending champion Denzel Comenentia took the lead.
McFarland responded by breaking his own school record. His sixth and final throw, which topped his previous best of 22.58, traveled 23.35 meters and won the SEC title.
After earning second place in the long jump on Friday, junior Grant Holloway won both the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.44 seconds and the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.54.
The three events combined made his individual point total of 28 points the most ever in the meet. He is also only the second man ever to win both events in the same year.
Senior Yanis David doubled her gold medal count on Saturday, winning the triple jump at 13.48 meters. Her SEC title completed her sweep of the horizontal jumps, as she won the women’s long jump on Friday at 6.46 meters. Both of David’s jumps in Fayetteville lead the nation.
The women overall finished in fourth place with 61 points to go along with the men’s 103-point conference championship. This is the men’s first SEC indoor championship since 2015, the eighth in program history.
