A Gainesville man was charged on Monday by Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies in connection to an attempted drive-by shooting that took place on July 21.

Curtis Woods, 29, drove a burgundy SUV to a home on SW 10th Place around 9 p.m. The homeowner was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car, which was backed-in into the driveway, according to a police report.

Woods reportedly fired three shots at the man, who immediately dropped to the ground. He told officers he crawled around to the back of his vehicle as Woods drove away, according to the police report.

Investigators were called to the scene shortly after the incident. Several bullet jackets were found around a trash can near the vehicle and behind the vehicle’s front left tire, according to the report.

The man told police he only knew Woods by his nickname, “Whoa,” and also said he was recently released from prison, according to the report.

He identified Woods from a Facebook profile picture for an account with the name “Rico Swavai,” which was immediately sent to ACSO, which was able to identify him by his real name. The man also identified Woods in a photo lineup.

Woods was charged with attempted homicide, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon, all of which are felonies. Woods has previously been convicted of battery and false imprisonment in connection to a 2016 incident.

Woods remains in jail in lieu of a $1,150,000 bond. It is unclear if he has an attorney.
