Forward Deanne Rose (21) scored two goals in Florida's season-opening win over FAU, including the overtime winner.

Junior forward Deanne Rose played in only 10 out of the 21 games for Florida’s soccer team in the 2018-19 campaign. She recorded two goals while playing 718 minutes last year due to national team commitments with Canada.

But Rose matched that in just 95 minutes on Friday night, scoring two goals in a 3-2 overtime victory over Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Florida. Her second goal came five minutes into overtime when she pounced on sophomore midfielder/forward Cassidy Lindley’s cross to give UF its first win of the season.

The first 15 minutes of the game consisted of sloppy play from both teams. The Gators (1-0-0) were called for two fouls and an offside, while the Owls (0-1-0) accumulated five fouls and an offside.

FAU forward Pernille Velta scored the first goal of the match in the 18th minute, sending a shot past UF’s senior goalkeeper Susi Espinoza.

Espinoza has replaced former goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese, who was drafted by Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League in January and owns the program record for most career shutouts with 29. Espinoza performed well in her first start in nearly a year, recording four crucial saves that allowed the Gators to mount a comeback.

Florida Atlantic went into the break holding a 1-0 lead, with the rain picking up as both teams walked back to the locker rooms. The rain caused a 40-minute weather delay less than two minutes into the second half.

UF took advantage of the extra rest, readily coming into the match and scoring in the 55th and 74th minute, respectively, to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.

Rose scored the equalizer with a left-footed shot.

Lindley, who came off the bench, put Florida ahead with a laser from outside of the box.

The Owls responded with a goal from midfielder Mary O’Hara in the 88th minute to send the game to overtime where Rose ended the game in the 95th minute to notch Florida’s seventh-consecutive win in season openers.

Coach Becky Burleigh and Florida’s soccer team have made a habit of starting their campaigns with a victory. And this season started out no differently.
