More than 550 Alachua County Public School students and staff in quarantine the third week of classes

As of Tuesday morning, most of the spread was tied to athletes who tested positive on sports teams

In the third week of classes, Alachua County Public School District has 559 students and faculty in quarantine, according to the school district’s COVID-19 dashboard.

Under protocol, those in quarantine reflect COVID-19 positive cases, people who have had significant contact with someone who has COVID-19, and in the case of sports teams, if an athlete or coach tests positive, the entire team must go into quarantine. ACPS’s total enrollment is 26,468 students as of Jan. 14.

There are 56 active COVID-19 student cases and 16 active staff cases as of Tuesday night. These cases represent students and staff who have reported a positive test result to ACPS within the past 10 days.

As of Tuesday morning, the increase of contacts in quarantine was mostly due to athletes who have tested positive on sports teams, ACPS spokesperson Jackie Johnson said. At least 100 students and staff are in quarantine due to this circumstance, she said.

ACPS continues to follow the advice of the Scientific Medical Advisory Council, which includes UF experts who monitor the county’s cases on a daily basis, Johnson said.
