Florida landed a commitment from four-star defensive back Dijon Johnson Thursday. Johnson is the Gators’ 22nd commit of the 2023 recruiting class and their third ranked in the top 100 of the 247Sports composite rankings.

Johnson had formerly committed to Ohio State, but decommitted from the Buckeyes in July. The Wharton High School standout is the No. 96 player in the 247Sports composite rankings and the third-highest ranked player in Florida’s current recruiting class.

Cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond and defensive coordinator and safeties coach Patrick Toney led the way on Johnson’s recruitment. The Tampa product is the sixth defensive back in the Gators 2023 class.

Earlier on Thursday, the Gators landed a commitment from three-star safety Bryce Thornton. The Alpharetta, Georgia, product is the No. 485 player in the 247Sports composite rankings and was also heavily recruited by Toney.

Florida’s 2023 class moved up three spots to No. 8 in the 247Sports team rankings after the commitments of Johnson and Thornton. The 2022 class finished No. 18 in the 247 rankings amidst the turmoil of the coaching change and a disappointing 6-7 record last season.

The Gators are still chasing the commitment of five-star cornerback Cormani McClain, the highest ranked uncommitted player in the 2023 recruiting class. McClain would be the highest ranked player in the 247Sports rankings to sign with the Gators since offensive tackle Martez Ivey in the 2015 class.
