The Gators men’s tennis team shined in its first match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend tournament. It beat South Florida to secure its second win of the season.

The No. 16 Florida Gators (2-1) defeated the USF Bulls (3-4) 4-1 Friday afternoon.

Graduate student Axel Nefve and junior Will Grant led the way in the first doubles match. The Gators defeated USF juniors Erik Grevelius and Davide Tortora 6-3.

South Florida junior Bruno Oliveira and sophomore Thomas Palvekovich-Smith won the next doubles match against Gators freshmen Tanapatt Nirundorn and Togan Tokac to give USF its only victory in the doubles round.

Senior Lukas Greif and freshman Jonah Braswell won the third match for UF 6-4. They beat Bulls freshman Samuel Frizelle and junior Alvin Tudorica to give Florida the doubles point.

In the singles round, Tudorica won his match against UF sophomore Nate Bonetto. He won in straight sets,  6-2, 6-3.

The Gators then won the final three singles matches. Braswell comfortably won both of his sets against Oliveira 6-2, 6-1.

Greif took on South Florida freshman Elijah Cham. The first set was a tight battle, with Greif winning 6-4. However, the second set proved to be no challenge; Greif won 6-2.

The final singles match was between Tokac and Palvekovich. Tokac, like his two teammates before him, won in straight sets. The first ended 6-3, but the second was a clean 6-0, sealing the deal for the Gators’ men.

The matches between Nefve and Tortora and Grant and Grevelius were stopped after Florida clinched its victory.

The Gators will advance to the ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship at 2 p.m. Saturday against Mississippi State. The match will be played in the Alfred A. Ring Complex.
