Florida junior attacker Danielle Pavinelli scored a goal following a save by UF redshirt senior goalkeeper Sarah Reznick to tie the game at 13 with one minute left. Maryland junior attacker Victoria Hensh broke the tie in the last 17 seconds of the game due to a foul by UF senior midfielder Emily Heller.
The No. 7 Florida Gators (1-2) were defeated by the No. 6 Maryland Terrapins (3-1) 14-13 in their third game of the season. The Gators put up an admirable fight, going shot-for-shot through the majority of the game.
Maryland owned the start of Saturday's game; it obtained possession of the ball and scored first.
The Gators recovered quickly with a draw control by senior midfielder Paisley Eagan, which resulted in a free-position shot by junior attacker Maggi Hall and a 1-1 tie.
Maryland was a man up after Pavinelli received a yellow card. The Terrapins took advantage and broke the tie, leaving the Gators down 2-1.
UF fired back with draw control by Heller. Fifth-year attacker Tayler Warehime took advantage and found junior midfielder Madison Waters for a goal.
The Terrapins followed with two goals, which came after fouls by Florida sophomore defender Alexa Waters and senior midfielder Shelton Sawers.
UF went shot-for-shot with Maryland. Pavinelli started the run when she scored off a free position attempt. Maryland found the back of the net shortly after, but Paisley passed the ball to Warehime for another goal.
Florida trailed 5-4 by the end of the quarter.
The Terrapins finished the second quarter with two more goals and left the Gators down 7-4 going into halftime.
Maryland made the first goal of the third quarter. Both teams then fought for possession for the next five minutes.
UF ended the scoring drought when Warehime found sophomore attacker Emma LoPinto for a goal. The Gators continued their shooting spree and put three more goals in the net to tie the game at eight by the end of the third quarter.
Junior attacker Ashley Gonzalez broke the tie on an assist from LoPinto. The sophomore attacker followed Gonzalez’s score with another to put the Gators up two.
Maryland tied the game back up after it scored twice to start the fourth quarter.
LoPinto broke the tie, only for the Terrapins to score again shortly after. Maryland made two consecutive goals to take a 13-11 lead.
LoPinto and Pavinelli scored in the last five minutes to tie the game at 13.
Maryland made a goal with 17 seconds remaining to give the Terrapins a 14-13 victory on Florida’s home turf.
The Gators will next play Furman at Donald R. Dizney Stadium at noon Tuesday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
