Marshall transfer freshman center Micah Handlogten announced Monday on Twitter he committed to the Florida Gators. The seven-footer chose the Gators over Auburn, Georgia, Missouri and four other schools from his top eight.

Handlogten’s decision to commit to UF came two days after his official visit with Florida from April 6 to April 8.

The commitment marks the second addition this offseason by Florida head coach Todd Golden. He officially signed former Yale graduate student forward EJ Jarvis April 3.

Handlogten is a 7-foot-1-inch, 227-pound big man that does a majority of his dirty work inside the paint. However, his unique skinny frame allows him to run down both ends of the floor and be acrobatic near the rim.

Handlogten was named 2023 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. He averaged 7.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.

His tendency to stay inside the paint on both ends of the floor is similar to the play style of his father, Ben Handlogten. His father was a former professional basketball player for the Utah Jazz and New Jersey Nets in the National Basketball Association. Handlogten’s father played a total of 38 games in his NBA career.

A North Carolina native, Handlogten attended Southlake Christian Academy in Huntersville, North Carolina, and dominated on the court as a 2x All-State athlete in men’s basketball. He averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks per game in his senior year.

Handlogten will join sophomore Alex Fudge, graduate student forward EJ Jarvis and freshman forward Aleks Szymczyk for UF’s group of bigs next season. The addition also provides a shot blocker to Florida’s arsenal.

Handlogten collected 60 blocks last season — including a six-block game against the Akron Zips Nov. 30.
