The Florida Gators women’s golf team put their skills on display Monday and Tuesday.
The team teed off at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, for the Glass City Invitational. UF won the 10-team tournament.
In the first two rounds of the tournament, senior Maisie Filler led the Gators. She finished the day tied for second place. The senior shot a team-low 2-under 70 in round one while finishing one shot back of the individual lead.
There were a total of seven golfers competing for UF at the Inverness Club during the first two rounds. Round two was called early due to darkness. Four Gators were positioned in the top-10 before play stopped.
A total of five Gators finished the first day in the top-10 on the player leaderboard. Freshman Paula Francisco shot an ace on hole three from 168 yards out to highlight her first round. Fifth year Jackie Lucena finished tied for sixth while shooting 2-under.
Fifth year Annabell Fuller finished tied tenth after posting an opening round score of 73. Freshman Sophie Stevens rounded out the top-10 finishes for the Gators on day one action.
Finishing the first round just outside the top-25 was freshman Ines Archer (T27) and fifth year Marina Escobar (T31).
Florida’s second round was called short due darkness. The team remained in first place by three strokes on the player leaderboard.
Heading into the final round, Florida got off to a slow start and fell as low as fourth on the team leaderboard. However, UF would rally on the back nine to come from behind and win the tournament.
The six-shot victory marked the first win for the team this Fall. The victory also marked head coach Emily Glaser’s 29th career win in her 13th year.
Six Gators finished in the top-18 on the player leaderboard. Filler once again led the way for UF in the third round and finished tied for runner-up.
Filler posted her fourth runner-up performance of her collegiate career. She shot all three rounds at even par or better for a 70-72-72 finish. Filler sparked a back-nine comeback for UF with three birdies.
Lucena recorded a team-low 69 3-under in the final round. She holed back-to-back birdies twice in her final two rounds on her way to finishing fifth at 3-under. Stevens claimed another top-15 performance as she T7 in her second week of collegiate action.
A duo of Gators had stellar performances this week as Archer and Francisco placed 17 and T18. Archer made a clutch downhill putt on 17 that contributed to the Gators late-round comeback.
Fuller’s third round was highlighted by going birdie-par-birdie on 16-18. The senior added three more pars down the stretch to solidify her top-10 T9 finish.
Rounding out the lineup in the final round was Escobar who T35. Her eagle on 13 helped her bounce back to shoot a 72 (+2) in round three.
Florida will continue their Fall schedule Oct. 9-10 as they travel to the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The two-day tournament will be a 54-hole event.
