DJ Lagway, a five-star Florida signee, was named the 2023-24 Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year Wednesday morning. The quarterback is also a top-three finalist for the 2023-24 Gatorade National Football Player of the Year.

The Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award is arguably the top honor in high school sports. Athletes are selected based on their athletic ability, academic achievement and personal character.

These recognitions come after Lagway earned the 2023 MaxPreps National Player of the Year award on Dec. 19, 2023.

Lagway committed to the Gators Dec. 7, 2022, and officially signed his national letter of intent to the University of Florida on early signing day, Dec. 20, 2023.

The Texas native set the Texas Class 6A single-season record for touchdown passes and brought Willis High School to its best record in 60 years with their first trip to the regional semifinals since 1994.

In his senior year at Willis, Lagway completed 72.1% of his pass attempts over 4,605 yards with 59 touchdowns. He carried the ball 100 times across 953 yards and brought 16 touchdowns to the house.
