Many out-of-state students choose the University of Florida due to its tuition, which is lower than the national average. Starting in the fall, this may no longer be the case.

In a public notice email sent Wednesday evening, the UF Board of Trustees said it will consider increasing out-of-state students’ tuition by 10%. The board will further discuss the increase during a special meeting July 23. If approved, the new costs will go into effect in Fall 2025.

UF hasn’t increased its undergraduate out-of-state fees since 2009. While cost of attendance for out-of-state students will remain among the lowest in the country, the release said, UF currently has the highest undergraduate out-of-state fees out of all Florida public universities.

“UF is seeking to increase out-of-state student fees to address rising operational costs and to ensure all students make an equitable contribution toward the world-class educational experience and services expected of Florida’s flagship institution,” the email wrote.

The increase would also apply to out-of-state students’ financial aid, according to a fee breakdown in the email.

UF Spokesperson Cynthia Roldán Hernández said the university doesn’t have any information to add at this time.

According to News Service of Florida, tuition at Florida public universities is about 28% lower than the national average of $30,140.

Out-of-state students made up over a quarter of UF’s student body in Fall 2023, with 15,954 students. With the proposed increase, a non-residential undergraduate student would pay $18,670 in two semesters if they were to take 12 credit hours each semester.

The announcement came days after the Florida Board of Governors unanimously adopted a 10% tuition increase for out-of-state students in the fall.

Tuition hikes have to be approved by Florida university boards of trustees and schools.

Each board of trustees will have to submit a proposal with approved tuition increases by a deadline established by University System Chancellor Ray Rodrigues.
