Florida quarterback DJ Lagway continues to garner preseason praise. On Monday, Lagway was named to the Walter Camp Award preseason watch list.
The Gators quarterback is one of 45 players named to the watch list. The Walter Camp Award recognizes those who contribute to the game of American football and uphold the ideals of Walter Camp while supporting various humanitarian programs and activities.
Lagway enters his first year as Florida's uncontested starting quarterback after making 12 appearances and seven starts as a freshman. He finished his freshman year tallying 1,915 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The Willis, Texas, native went 6-1 in starts and won every game he started and finished. The only loss came against the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs, when Lagway exited with a hamstring injury while Florida led 10-3 entering halftime.
Florida’s sophomore quarterback racked up eight different Freshman All-American honors, was named the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl MVP and spearheaded helping numerous nonprofit organizations in the Gainesville area during his freshman year.
A committee made up of 133 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors will narrow the list of players to a group of 10 semifinalists in November. The list will narrow even further to three players in December with the winner being announced Dec. 12.
