Florida’s frontcourt continues to show out, as junior forward Alex Condon and junior center Rueben Chinyleu were honored with weekly awards after their performances against South Carolina and Alabama.
Condon was named co-SEC Player of the Week alongside Texas A&M forward Rashaun Agee. Against South Carolina, Condon racked up 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
He followed that up with arguably his best performance of the year against Alabama, tying his season high with 25 points while adding seven boards and six dimes. He also had two steals and two blocked shots without a turnover, becoming the first SEC player this century to hit all those marks in a game.
Condon picked up the honor for the first time this season and the fourth time in his career. He became the third Gator with at least four SEC Player of the Week recognitions, joining Vernon Maxwell (five) and Colin Castleton (four).
Meanwhile, Chinyleu was named Naismith Player of the Week after two double-doubles. He posted 14 points and 11 rebounds against South Carolina, followed by a 14-point, 17-rebound game against the Crimson Tide. His 13 double-doubles this season lead the SEC and rank sixth in program history.
What’s been most impressive about Chinyleu’s game has been his defense. The Enugwu-Agidi, Nigeria, native helped subdue an Alabama frontcourt boasting a former NBA player, as the Crimson Tide were held to just 26 paint points.
Florida’s big-man tandem will look to remain on point as they take on the Texas A&M Aggies (17-4, 7-1 SEC) on Saturday at 8:30 p.m in College Station, Texas.
