The dual match came down to the third set as junior Kevin Edengren mounted a relentless comeback, winning 6-4 in his last two sets and securing the win for the Gators.
After a slow start to the ITA National Indoors on Friday, Florida got things going and defeated Clemson 4-3 in the tournament's day-two back draw round Saturday night in Dallas, Texas. The Gators refused to back down despite being tested throughout the match.
This relentless style of play was seen across various courts, with domination first on the doubles courts as momentum shifted after Friday’s loss.
It was first seen in the senior junior pairing of Lorenzo Claverie and Henry Jefferson, who recorded their first doubles win of the tournament. They defeated Clemson’s No. 56 doubles pairing 6-3.
Florida secured the doubles point with another 6-3 win, thanks to freshman Andreas Timini and Edengren.
In singles, senior Pablo Perez Ramos took charge first with a masterful performance. After trailing 4-5 in his abandoned doubles match, Ramos commandeered his courts.
He played flawlessly for the rest of the night, only allowing 5 points in both sets, winning 6-1 and 6-4.
Jefferson continued his commanding campaign and persevered through the first tiebreaker game of the evening. He won the first set 7-6 by sweeping Croatian junior Noa Vukadin 7-3 in the tiebreaker.
To complete the night and record the third point for Florida, Jefferson won his last set 6-3.
Although he lost his singles match, Claverie played valiantly, forcing a nail-biting first tie-breaker set. Upon returning serves, he underestimated his opponents' decision, playing too close to the service boxes.
He decided to switch things up and fell back to “no man's land,” where he ultimately lost the tiebreaker 10-8. Clemson freshman Matisse Farzam then iced the match with a 7-6 second-set win.
Florida's two other losses were junior Adhithya Ganesan, who lost 7-5, 6-3, and senior Tanapatt Nirundorn, who lost the first singles match of the tournament, 6-3, 7-5.
Despite not advancing to the championship round, Florida still looks to come out of this tournament with a winning record. Tied up 1-1, it has one more day to do so.
The Gators will battle one of the ITA Indoors host-site programs, the Southern Methodist University Mustangs, on Sunday at 5 p.m. at SMU’s host site in Dallas.
