After falling to No. 7 LSU earlier on Saturday, Florida looked to reset quickly in the second half of its doubleheader against Presbyterian College (9-8).
No. 21 Florida (14-11, 5-7 SEC) left fans with one last home victory as it cruised to a 7-0 win at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. The victory marked the third time this season that Florida closed out a doubleheader with a second-half win after losing the first matchup and its fourth shutout victory of the season.
“We needed it,” said Florida tennis coach Adam Steinberg. “This was a really good match for us. They were a really good team. I think it challenged us a lot and made us better.”
Doubles began with a lineup change as senior Pablo Perez Ramos and junior Henry Jefferson took center court for the first time this season. Senior David Mamalat and junior Matija Samardzic dueled competitively, but fell 7-5 as the Gators took the doubles point.
Senior Lorenzo Claverie and junior Jeremy Jin anchored the doubles portion and took on Thomas Anderson and Eduardo Valentin. Claverie returned to the doubles lineup for the first time since March 22 against Tennessee. The duo got its first doubles win and almost bagelled it, taking a 6-1 victory.
Junior Kevin Edengren and freshman Andreas Timini moved up one position from their traditional No. 3 spot. Dario Navarro and Daksh Prasad went 5-3, but the Gators prevailed and took three straight games. The match was left unfinished in their favor 6-5 (15-30).
Much like the other doubleheaders, the singles started and ended with complete Florida control. The Gators, for a third time this season in doubleheaders, swept the singles portion.
After falling to LSU earlier in the day, multiple Gators entered singles play looking to even their records.
But perhaps the most fueled revenge effort came from Edengren as he snapped his four-game losing streak just hours ago. The junior bageled Navarro in the first set and only let up three on the second to grab Florida’s second point.
Jefferson followed the avenging theme as he took on Mamalat for a 6-2 first set. The junior reached 11-10 in singles this season with the 6-3 straight set win.
The next court to fall in Florida’s favor was manned by junior Adhithya Ganesan. He achieved a straight-set victory with a close match. The Gator crept out of the first set with a 6-3 win. As the second set was tied up at six, it went into the third tiebreaker of the day. Ganesan went on to grab his first win in five matches and broke a three-game losing streak with the 7-6 (7-2) last set.
Sophomore Francesco Cordova kept the pressure on as he returned to the singles lineup, where he faced freshman Thomas Anderson. He reinforced the Gators' dominant style, opening with a 6-3 first-set victory. He grabbed the third point for the Gators with his 6-1 final set.
The only senior to play in singles brought back-to-back wins. Despite falling 6-2 in the first set, Ramos delivered a clutch 7-5 middle set and 1-0 (11-9) super tiebreaker campaign.
“I told him to play with his heart,” Steinberg said. “He wasn't doing that, he was just playing with frustration, he’s got the biggest heart in college tennis, one of the biggest I've ever coached. I wanted him to take it out of his bag and put it in his chest and play…I was really happy he got through that on Senior Day.
On the next court, Timini delivered a tight finish. The Cypriot secured the 6-3 first-set triumph, but was challenged in his second-set skirmish, where he was dropped with the same score. The dual match concluded with another super-set tiebreaker as the freshman improved his singles record to 8-5 with the 1-0 (10-6) win.
After a long doubleheader, Florida will travel to Austin, Texas, for its hardest matchup of the season against No. 2 University of Texas at Austin (19-6, 10-2 SEC) on Friday at 7 p.m.
