As the Gators hit the road for their first Southeastern Conference test of the season, offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and defensive coordinator Brad White face very different challenges.
Faulkner prepares for one of the most proven defenses in the SEC, a unit that retained much of the firepower that boosted it to No. 7 in points allowed per game in 2025. The Tigers have let up just 12 points per game thus far.
Auburn defensive coordinator DJ Durkin is in the midst of his third season in the position after serving as interim head coach for three games last year. His group finished No. 12 in the nation in 2025 in run defense and is expected to boast a similar stature this season.
“You can see his defenses everywhere he's been; they play with their hair on fire, they play fast, they play confident,” Faulkner said. “Got a great deal of respect for him. It's going to be a big challenge for us on the road.”
Faulkner has the ability to look over film from Durkin’s journey in college football. The defensive mastermind took two seasons in College Station and reimagined the Aggies’ front seven. Texas A&M held the third-best total defense in the SEC and 19th-best in the nation in 2023.
However, White is not experiencing the same luxury. The Gators go up against a completely revamped offense Saturday, one with remnants of last season’s South Florida team that took down Florida 18-16 in The Swamp.
Head coach Alex Golesh is in his first year with the Tigers, coming from USF — where he spent three seasons and notched bowl-game appearances in each — and bringing much of the Bulls’ offensive spark with him.
Along with multiple offensive assistants, Golesh poached starting quarterback Byrum Brown and a plethora of wide receivers, including starters Chas Nimrod, Jeremiah Koger and Keshaun Singleton.
The Tigers have just one returner in their starting group, four-year staple running back Jeremiah Cobb.
“It's going to be an offense that understands the system,” White said. “A lot of these guys have played in the system with coach Golesh for a couple of years now, so they understand how the process works, how the operation functions. So you add that system, that pace, that tempo with a talented group of skill players, a nasty group of o-linemen … it's going to be a fist fight, a rock fight in there, and we got to be ready for that kind of battle.”
While Sumrall, White and Faulkner were not in Gainesville to witness the massive upset on Sept. 6, 2025, the crew has their eyes set on dominating in Florida’s first conference matchup of the year. Sumrall preached starting SEC play with a head full of steam and setting the tone for the rest of the nine-game conference stretch following the Gators’ beatdown of Campbell.
Aside from the obvious — coming out of the Jordan-Hare Stadium 3-0 on the year — Saturday stands as a token for the rest of the season. It marks the first test for Sumrall’s staff outside of Gainesville and kicks off three away games of the next five contests.
“One thing about me and one thing about us is each week it’s the exact same preparation,” Faulkner said. “We’re going to prepare the same way every week no matter who we’re playing.”
Quarterback Aaron Philo will suit up for the first road start of his young career and will face a crowd of 85,000-plus. The junior commanded Florida’s offense through two games, averaging 258.5 passing yards and logging five touchdowns. Playing in The Swamp with the Gator faithful behind you is one thing, but traveling to a hostile SEC environment for your first away test is another.
“You’re not just playing against 11 defenders; you’ve got the crowd, and we’ve got to do a great job of handling that,” Faulkner said. “One thing about [Philo] is he’s pretty cool, calm and collected, so we’ll coach him through it.”
The Gators face Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET as they hunt for the program's first 3-0 start since 2019.
