UF was ranked No. 2 by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as one of America’s 100 Best Values in Public Colleges.

It ranked behind the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

UF spokesman Steve Orlando was not surprised by the rankings, noting that UF has placed second to UNC Chapel Hill for several years.

“What is very interesting though is that our tuition, even with the increase, is still lower than UNC and the national average,” said Orlando. “It really speaks volumes to the kind of value that our students are getting for the tuition they are paying.”

The Kiplinger rankings are based on a combination of academics and affordability, according to its Web site.

UF is required to use the money from the tuition increase to hire additional faculty, which allows the university to increase the quality of education, said Orlando.

Other Florida schools that made the cut were No. 12 New College of Florida, No. 17 Florida State University, and No. 36 University of Central Florida, according to the site.
