Lake Wauburg’s building structures, docks and watercraft equipment took a hit from strong winds during winter break. Despite that, though, it is reopening to the public.

UF RecSports announced Friday on Facebook that while the south shore will reopen Tuesday, the north shore will remain closed for repairs.

The damage occurred in the early morning of Dec. 14 because of 75 mph winds. Whether a tornado caused it is unconfirmed, though high winds damaged the area, said Aaron Hobson, director of operations for RecSports.

The harsh weather affected solely the north shore, where boat shelters and trees in the area were impaired. There is no confirmed date to reopen

the north shore, though activities may resume in the next week or two,

Hobson said.

“We’ve got a number of contractors,” Hobson said. “Facility services has been helping us significantly with tree removal and debris removal. That’s probably our number one concern.”

Twenty-one-year-old theatre senior Nicole Mooradian has visited Lake Wauburg multiple times to kayak and unwind throughout her time at UF.

“I was really surprised and saddened to hear about [the damage to the lake],” Mooradian wrote over direct message. “I had no idea there had even been a storm. The pictures that I saw were really sad to see.”
