It appeared the Nick Zimmerman era was off to a picture-perfect start. Florida jumped out to a 2-0 lead and dominated the attack early, but UCF found its rhythm and erased the deficit with four unanswered goals to stun the Gators.
Ultimately, Florida (0-1) dropped its season opener 4-2 against UCF (1-0) on Thursday night at the UCF Soccer Complex. The victory marked the Knights’ seventh straight over the Gators.
Florida struck almost immediately, finding the back of the net in the opening minute. Zoe Main fired a shot past the UCF goalkeeper to give the Gators an early 1-0 lead. Main is one of seven Mississippi State transfers who followed head coach Nick Zimmerman to Gainesville and earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2024.
Florida’s offense continued to apply pressure, with sophomore midfielder Adia Symmonds at the center of the attack. After recording two early shots, Symmonds broke through on her third attempt. In the 18th minute, she curled a left-footed shot into the net to extend the Gators’ lead to 2-0.
But the two-goal cushion didn’t last long.
UCF responded when Naomi Clark slotted her first goal of the night into the back left corner of the net, cutting Florida’s advantage to 2-1.
The Gators carried the one-goal lead into halftime after recording 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes.
It didn’t take long for the Knights to find the equalizer. Just three minutes into the second half, junior Ella Holloran found the back left corner of the net to even the match at 2-2. Holloran started seven games in 2025 and appeared in all 21 contests.
Just three minutes later, Clark struck again, scoring the go-ahead goal to give UCF a 3-2 lead. Sophomore midfielder Gabi Berchon later converted a penalty kick to extend the Knights’ advantage to 4-2.
Florida continued to push forward and finished the match with a 24-11 advantage in shots, but the Gators were unable to overcome UCF’s second-half surge.
Florida’s Hannah Jibril converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute, but it wasn’t enough as UCF held on for the victory.
Florida returns to action next Thursday for its home opener against Coastal Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
